PLI: AMUSEMENT LICENSES

Amusement Licenses

The Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections Issues and Inspects Licenses for individuals or businesses that generate revenue from amusement.

This category includes:

  • Arcades and game shops
  • Pool halls
  • Bars and restaurants that have video poker, video games, pinball games, pool tables, or other video machines in place
  • Any establishment that is charging a fee for entry (including bars and clubs, reception halls, or other gathering places)
  • Parades or carnivals.

Amusement Places and Producers License

Anyone who conducts a place of amusement or is a producer of amusements must obtain a license from the License Officer. A place of amusement means any place, indoors or outdoors, within the City, where the general public or a limited number of persons may, upon payment of an established price, attend or engage in any amusement.

How Get an Amusement Places and Producers License

  • Download and complete the License Application.
  • Print the application, fill it out completely, and mail it, or bring it in person, with all other Additional Information and Current Fee.
  • Make all checks payable to Treasurer, City of Pittsburgh:

Additional Information Required

When applying for an Amusement Places or Producers License in person, you must submit the following information:

  • The name of the licensee (your name), proof of identification, and any other name under which your business is to be conducted.
  • The address of the business you are licensing.
  • Anticipated hours of operation.
  • The type of amusements being conducted.
  • The number of people expected to attend.
  • City Tax ID Number.

 

Arcade License

When You Need an Arcade License

Anyone who operates a place of amusement in which six or more coin-operated mechanical or electronic amusement devices are operated must obtain a license from the License Officer.

How to Get an Amusement Places and Producers License

1) Download and complete the License Application.

2) Print the application, fill it out completely, and mail it, or bring it in person, with all other Additional Information and Current Fee.

3) Make all checks payable to Treasurer, City of Pittsburgh.

Once the new application is processed, an inspection will be scheduled, after which, the license can be issued to the applicant. License renewal inspections occur as part of the departmental maintenance schedule.

Additional Information Required

When applying for an Arcade License, you must submit the following information, or your application cannot be processed.

  • The Occupancy Certificate on file must indicate that the building is certified for use as an arcade
  • The name of the licensee (your name), proof of identification, and any other name under which your business is to be conducted.
  • The address of the business you are licensing.
  • Hours of operation.
  • City of Pittsburgh Tax ID number
  • Number of machines

Notice for Arcade License Renewals in 2016

In an effort to improve our billing and processing, we are now requiring the same information to be provided on all applications, including renewals. Applications and documents must be reviewed individually to ensure compliance with city ordinances. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Carnival or Parade License

When You Need a Carnival or Parade License

Anyone who is responsible for conducting a parade, walk, race, carnival, or similar processional outdoor event, must obtain a license from the License Officer.

What to Bring With You

When applying for a Parade License, you must bring the following materials with you:

  • The name of the licensee (your name), proof of identification, and any other name under which the parade is to be conducted.
  • All information needed to state the character and object, time, place, and route of the event.
  • Names of the persons in charge or responsible for control.

Mechanical Device License

When You Need a Mechanical Amusement Devices License

Anyone who sets up or establishes a mechanical or electronic device for amusement and profit must obtain a license from the License Officer.

How to Obtain a Mechanical Amusement Devices License

1) Download and complete the License Application

2) Print the application, fill it out completely, and mail it, or bring it in person, with all other Additional Information and Current Fee.

  • The name of the licensee (your name), proof of identification, and any other name under which your business is to be conducted.
  • The address of the business you are licensing.
  • Name and address of the premises owner.
  • Name, address, and telephone number of business establishment owner or proprietor where machines are to be installed and used, and lease term if applicable.
  • Name, address, and telephone number of owner of each device.
  • A list, provided by the device owner on January 1 and July 1 of each year, of the names and locations of each mechanical device and jukebox located within the City.
  • If the owner is a corporate entity or partnership, the name address, and phone number of each individual who owns more than 5 percent of the corporate entity or partnership, and the names, address, and phone number for each individual who lends more than $500 to the corporate entity or partnership.
  • A list of the types of devices located on the premises.
  • Registration -To place machines in the City you need to be registered.
  • City Tax ID Number.
  • Valid commercial occupancy for the business where the machines are located.

Sign Maintenance Certifications

City Code 1004.02, Section 103.5.1; Maintenance and inspection fees: The owner or user of any sign shall pay an annual fee for maintenance and inspection.

DUE TO DIFFICULTIES ISSUING INVOICES FOR 2017, LATE FEES ON THIS YEAR'S SIGN MAINTENANCE CERTIFICATES WILL ONLY BE ASSESSED 60 DAYS POST EXPIRATION

Upon issuance of a sign occupancy, and yearly unless the sign is completely removed, the owner or user of any sign in Pittsburgh is required to complete a Sign Maintenance Certificate application and provide payment for maintenance and inspection.  Multiple signs at the same location may be listed on the same certificate.

Requirements for New Sign Maintenance Certificates:
